Submerged arc welding (SAW) is a well-established process that uses a continuous feed of a filler or electrode, melted by an electric arc between the electrode/filler and the work. In a submerged arc welding system, the arc is submerged under a layer of granular flux powder that covers the weld path, with no fumes, smoke, sparks, spatters or arc rays. Sub arc welding provides businesses with improvements to health and safety as well as an environmentally friendly process.
SAW allows greater control and automation of straightforward welds, reducing the direct need for operator skill.
The process operates on flat and horizontal welding positions, with the weld advancing by moving the welding system or workpiece.

The welding process is invisible to the eye as it happens under a thick layer of flux – the flux is conductive when molten, allowing the current to pass to the workpiece without any sparks, splashing or fumes. The flux is fed from a hopper through a weld head using a continuous feed. Depending on the setup, one to five wires (electrodes) are continuously fed to maintain an arc under the flux. Excess flux can be collected via a flux recovery system for reuse.
